DAME has reimagined period products, creating comfortable, toxin-free, sustainable alternatives, while also breaking a few taboos along the way. Their mission as a company is to make periods positive for every woman by creating sustainable, planet-friendly sanitary products as a certified B Corp.
For example, Dame believes tampon applicators are useful, but once discarded, they become waste. Perhaps calling them useless is too kind—1.3 billion plastic applicators are thrown away after just one use every year in the UK.
However, they understand that many people prefer tampons with applicators and always have. That’s why their reusable applicator is designed to offer all the benefits of a traditional applicator without the environmental downsides.
The more the DAME applicator is used, the more sustainable it becomes. Dame continuously tracks the products their applicator replaces, how many people are using them, and how often. As of July 2023, Dame has prevented over 20 million disposable plastic applicators from ending up as waste.
Dame also strives to measure every step of their products’ existence—from the impact of the materials, production, and transportation, to the impacts of using the products and finally disposing of them. The two largest areas of carbon emissions are using and distributing. Interestingly, it’s their reusable products that create emissions during the using phase, because they are washed repeatedly for years. Meanwhile, it’s their disposable products that account for the lion’s share of distribution emissions, as they are sold more frequently and in higher volumes.
