A highly nutritious, gluten-free seed that serves as a great grain alternative. It is rich in protein, fibre, and essential minerals such as magnesium and manganese, which support heart health and digestion. Its earthy, nutty flavour makes it a popular choice for dishes like porridge, pancakes, and Japanese soba noodles. Additionally, buckwheat is valued for its slow-digesting carbohydrates, which provide sustained energy.
Despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat; it is classified as a pseudocereal. This seed originated in Southeast Asia over 6,000 years ago, particularly in China's Yunnan province, before spreading through Central Asia and into Europe. Today, buckwheat remains a staple in Eastern European and Asian cuisines.
